The Case for Catholicism

by Trent Horn

Some books talk to skeptics. This one talks to Bible-believing Protestants, the people most likely to bring a concordance to the conversation. Trent Horn, writing for Ignatius Press, takes their standard objections to the Catholic Church and answers them one at a time, with Scripture front and center.

The big fights are all here: Scripture and Tradition, the papacy, justification and salvation, the Eucharist, purgatory, Mary and the saints. Horn's method is disciplined. He states the objection fairly, often in the words of its best defenders. Then he works through the biblical and historical evidence. He's firm without being nasty. Protestants are treated as fellow Christians to persuade, not enemies to flatten.

It suits inquirers coming from Protestant churches, Catholics married to Protestants, and catechists who keep fielding the same questions. It is more detailed than an introduction, so go in with a specific question and let the table of contents point the way.

Key Takeaways

  • Objections stated fairly before they're answered.
